I’m the writer of the Mermaid Adventures series and write under the pen name C. L. Savage. It’s mostly because I felt that my name might throw first time readers, and we don’t want that. Once you’d read a book or two, you probably wouldn’t care anymore. The gloves may come off at some point, and of course if you came to a book signing – there I’d be.
A bit about me. I spent my early years in Hinsdale Illinois. There I learned a bit about family, being the third of four kids with a mom and dad that was always around. I know that isn’t how many grow up nowadays, and so I try to reflect that in my stories.
At fourteen, our family moved to Boulder Colorado, because my older sisters where going to college there. I’ve been there ever since, except for a stint in the US Air Force. Boulder has been good to me, though occasionally I think of other locations to live – I’ve yet to move. It would be hard. I’ve so many friends here.
Writing hasn’t always been my thing. In fact it is only recently that I’ve pursued it full time. Before that, and somewhat currently, I’ve been a computer chip-head, geek, nut (a.k.a programmer).
I was introduced to computers at an early age. My father sold computers for DEC and we had one in our home. A rarity in the early days of computers.
In the time between then and now, I’ve had the privilege, if you’d call it that, to learn some 40+ programming languages. Also I began to read as a hobby, mostly fiction novels – fantasy and science-fiction being my favorite genres. Reading became a passion in High School, with the Lord of the Rings series. Tolkien can weave a good tale, but that wetted my appetite for more. I read on up through my college years, but eventually reading couldn’t satisfy my imagination. I turned to writing.
In the fifteen years or so before writing my first book, I started jotting down ideas as they came to me – stories. I could spend a few minutes or days writing down a story, only to shelve it at some point. I have hundreds of unfinished stories. But what they did for me, was I learned to write. How to have dialogue between characters, and how to carry a narrative beyond a narrator. Mostly though, my stories were an outlet to my ideas, but they didn’t make me want to share them. People would ask if I was published when I told them what I was doing, unfortunately I’d never gotten that far.
Eventually, near the end of 2013, I came up with the idea that became “Mermaid Rising.” I wrote a chapter, shared it with a friend, and they liked it. They encouraged me to write more. We talked ideas, and shaped what would be the general direction for the series. It was quite a push to get that first book out.
Book 1 of Mermaid Adventures – “Mermaid Rising” did eventually get (self) published. Which was quite an accomplishment for me. Since then I’ve completed book 2, and a Christmas short story. The third book is a work in progress. And I’ve ideas for still more. I’ll be at this for some time. Stick around for lots of mermaid fun and adventures.
That’s enough about me. Let’s hear from you.
